What is Periodontology?
Periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases that affect the gums and other tissues which support teeth. Periodontal diseases are responsible for 70% of tooth losses in adults. When these diseases are diagnosed at an early stage, they can be treated easily and successfully.
Periodontal diseases start with gingivitis. So, gingivitis is the early period of periodontal disease. During this period, the gums bleed, red colored and enlarged in volume. It may not cause much discomfort in the early period. In case untreated, disease may progress to periodontitis, causing irreversible damage to the gums and jawbone supporting the teeth.
Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of periodontal diseases. Along with other tissues that support the teeth, damage also occurs to the jawbone. As the disease progresses, the teeth start to shake and may even be extracted.
Receding gums
One of the gingival diseases seen in a large part of the population is gingival recession. Gingival recession is the opening of the tooth root surface through changing the position of the gingival tissue that covers the bone surrounding the tooth for many reasons. Gingival recession is a very common problem that can cause aesthetic and sensitivity complaints. Gingival recession is usually caused by untreated dental diseases and due to not cleaning the tartar. In case gingival recession is not treated, it may progress and eventually cause tooth loss. If gingival recession is not treated, it may progress and eventually cause tooth loss. Protective, maintenance and / or surgical methods are used in gingival recession treatments.
